From Grateful Patient to Fulfilled Medical Assistant
Spotlight on Jairo Hernandez During Medical Assistant Recognition Week
Jairo Hernandez, a certified medical assistant at Zufall Health, vividly remembers the moment he chose to pursue a career in health care. At six years old, he witnessed a group of doctors visiting his remote Honduran community to provide essential medical care. With no nearby hospitals, many residents had never seen a doctor before. The gratitude of his neighbors, receiving urgent care, left a lasting impression on him and sparked his desire to help others.
Years later, Hernandez had another pivotal moment when he discovered Zufall Health after moving to the U.S. After falling ill, he sought treatment at Zufall and felt the same care and compassion he had witnessed in his childhood. “In gratitude, I chose to pursue a career as a medical assistant at Zufall,” he says. “The expertise and dedication of my colleagues and mentors solidified my decision to be part of this remarkable organization.”
Now, with two and a half years of experience at Zufall, Hernandez prepares patients for exams, conducts initial screenings, assists during procedures, and ensures patients are comfortable and informed throughout their visits. “It’s a rewarding role that allows me to contribute to the compassionate care our health care team provides,” he adds.
One of the biggest lessons Hernandez has learned is the importance of taking care of himself—physically, emotionally, and mentally—to effectively help others. He’s gained many insights along the way, but this stands out as the most significant.
Looking ahead, Hernandez aspires to become a registered nurse, ultimately aiming to become a pediatrician.
During Medical Assistant Recognition Week (October 21 – 25, 2024), we celebrate Hernandez’s dedication to his patients and community. His commitment, like that of our many medical assistants across seven New Jersey counties, makes a meaningful impact every day at Zufall Health.
