Why I Give: Supporting Zufall Health aligns with local restauranteur’s vision of community
When Rick St. Pierre opened Verve Restaurant in Somerville, his goal was more than just creating a dining destination. He wanted to build a community hub that supports local nonprofit organizations.
Little did he know Zufall Health’s Somerville office would open less than a mile away. St. Pierre immediately admired its mission to provide affordable, comprehensive health care to those in need. He was especially impressed by Zufall’s sliding fee discount program, which makes care accessible to families regardless of their income, and its innovative programs, like mobile dental care.
In gratitude for these services, St. Pierre launched Verve’s Crabfest, a weekend-long fundraiser for the health center. Each July, the restaurant shifts from French cuisine to Maryland-style crabs, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting Zufall. St. Pierre also donates chef’s dinner experiences as prizes for Zufall’s annual galas.
St. Pierre’s connection grew stronger after meeting the late Dr. Bob Zufall, the health center’s co-founder. “Meeting the doctor behind this incredible community resource was so inspiring,” he recalls. “His warm personality reinforced that Zufall provides not just health care, but a path forward in life.”
Since St Pierre got involved, Zufall’s Somerset County presence has since grown significantly, including the addition of dental exam rooms in Somerville last year. For St. Pierre, this expansion highlights the importance of dental health in overall health and underscores Zufall’s commitment to meeting as many needs as possible.
“Zufall offers a ‘yes’ to those seeking care and creates opportunities people didn’t know existed,” he says. “I’m proud to be able to support a mission that transforms so many lives in Somerset County and beyond.”
